Now I
don't want you to think for one single moment that I approve of
uninsured drivers on our roads. The not only are a danger to our
pockets, but it is undeniable that a far higher proportion of those
who have not bothered to buy an insurance policy and good,
hard-working, insured drivers have accidents. Furthermore, these
accidents tend to be far more horrific than the average bump! It has
been calculated that if every person on the road had in fact taken
out car insurance, the cost of a policy to all the rest of us could
fall by around £40.
And, a fall in the cost of insurance prices would be something
completely novel! The trend has been upwards ever since insurance
was first invented, and the increase in costs over the last 12
months have reached record rates. It is not surprising that
temporary car insurance (see
here)has become such a popular commodity.
There was a time when the only people who bought temporary
policies with those who either were extremely desperate, or
extremely wealthy, because the cost of them was quite horrific. This
is not terribly surprising when you realise how insurance was bought
in those days; nearly every policy had to go through a broker, and
the brokers had to pay for their very nice offices, their company
cars, secretaries, office parties, and all the other costs that the
accountants could justify! Many people who bought insurance were
under the deluded impression that the brokers picked up only a small
fee from the insurance companies in exchange for sending them the
business, whereas in fact their charges could reach 30% or even 40%
of the total premium. It was hardly surprising therefore that when
it first became possible to buy car insurance by telephone, thus
cutting out the cost of the middleman, this was an instant success.
Scarcely anyone buys insurance by telephone now, because the market
has switched to the Internet which is not only brought even greater
savings but is also made it possible to sell products such as
temporary insurance at prices which could not have been imagined
only a few years ago. This is because the whole system is now
automated, and it is possible to go straight from obtaining an
online quotation to actually purchasing the policy in just a few
minutes, and at a very reasonable cost.
Temporary car insurance is mainly purchased by people who need to
borrow a car for purposes such as holidaying, conveying goods, or
taking a larger number of passengers on a journey that would fit in
the usual family car; or by those who wish to lend their car to
friends, relatives or neighbours. It is possible to buy policy which
is either third-party fully comprehensive, and optional extras
include cover for travelling throughout Europe and breakdown
assistance. Whereas it is usually necessary to hold a full UK
driving licence, EU licences are accepted by most companies and the
number even accept Australian or New Zealand ones too.
